WHAT WILL STUDENTS LEARN

By the end of class, your students will be able to define AI in their own words and identify at least 5 places AI shows up in their daily life. This lesson covers the difference between AI and a regular computer program, the most common kinds of AI students already use (voice assistants, recommendation systems, image recognition, chatbots, generative AI), and the vocabulary they need to keep talking about AI.

WHY TEACHERS LOVE THIS LESSON

  • Zero prep, teach tomorrow. Print the PDF, run the lesson, done.
  • Honest, not hyped. Covers what AI IS and what it ISN'T (calculators and flashlights aren't AI, the lesson makes the distinction explicit).
  • Standards-aligned. Pulls from CSTA 1B-IC-18, 1B-IC-20 and ISTE 1.3.b/d.
  • Differentiable. Cards have multiple-choice format. Worksheet supports partner OR solo work. Discussion prompts work for whole-class OR journal entries.
  • Built by an actual classroom teacher. Tested with real 5th graders.

PERFECT FOR

  • Grade 4-6 tech / digital literacy classrooms
  • Hour of AI / Hour of Code week
  • Library and media-center programs
